Master of the Divine Beasts (Hangul: 신수의 주인, Sinsuui Juin, lit.: "The owner of the divine beast") or Fortune Master, is a webtoon written and illustrated by Zev and based on the web novel of the same name written by Taesun, but this webtoon started publishing on the Internet several years before the original web novel.

This webtoon was first published unofficially on the Naver Best Challenge online platform from April 14, 2014 to May 30, 2014, and then published officially on the Kakaopage online platform from June 30, 2014 to May 29, 2017.

Taesun started writing the Master of the Divine Beasts novel in 2013, but in 2013, the Samyang Chulpansa publishing company (which published Taesun's novels and webtoons from 2009 to 2020) did not want to publish this novel, however, when the Master of the Divine Beasts webtoon became one of the most popular webtoons on the Kakaopage online platform, it led to the Master of the Divine Beasts novel to be released by Samyang Chulpansa as a web novel on Kakaopage from November 21, 2016 to July 26, 2017, as a paperback from February 6, 2017 to October 23, 2017, and as an e-book on September 1, 2018.

In addition, the mobile RPG game Master of the Divine Beasts: The Summon Masters (Hangul: 신수의 주인: The Summon Masters, Sinsuui Juin: The Summon Masters, lit.: "The owner of the divine beast: The Summon Masters") based on this novel was created in 2013 and was supposed to be released in February 2014, but the release of this game was canceled due to an accusation of copying the art style from a Japanese game Bravely Default: Flying Fairy for Nintendo 3DS (2012). Journalistic articles and videos about the game Master of the Divine Beasts: The Summon Masters began to be published on the Internet around October 2013.

Characters[]

  • Kai Altelion (카이 알테리온)

Protagonist. A beautiful 20-year-old female blacksmith who has great physical strength and can understand the language of metals. She lives in the patriarchal country of the Jeguk (제국, lit.: "Empire") on the planet Atreia (아트레이아) where women are required to be wives and mothers and are not allowed to be swordsmen, blacksmiths, etc., but she promised herself that she would dedicate her life to the profession of a blacksmith and never marry. However, her parents are very eager to marry her off, which is why at the beginning of the story, they forced her to become engaged to Akanel Arnok.

Akanel postponed their wedding and promised Kai that he would break off their engagement if she could make a legendary magic sword that could kill an immortal dragon. Also, Akanel made Kai promise him that she would not fight with any swords until she had crafted this legendary sword.

As a result, Kai and Akanel traveled together from the country of Jeguk to the magical kingdom of Altamir (알타미르) to find some divine beast that would make a magical contract with Kai and help her create a magical sword. Kai's brother, Canoc Altelion, looks after them because he is protective of Kai and doesn't trust Akanel.

In the webtoon, Kai usually plays the role of a damsel in distress who is regularly rescued by several bishounens from monsters and bandits, while in the novel, she is a talented swordswoman who loves to fight with two swords at the same time. In addition, in the novel, she was assigned the mission to save her planet Atreia from a magical monster named Jongeonui Masu (종언의 마수, lit.: "End Beast", "Doomsday Beast", "Apocalyptic Beast") that feeds on planets.

  • Akanel Arnok (아카넬 아르노크)

Grand Duke. One of the top 3 swordsmen in the country of Jeguk. Kai's official fiancé who was chosen by her father Canas Altelion who has been friends with Akanel for a long time. A rich man who was disappointed in women and did not want to marry anyone, but he always keeps all his promises and he accidentally gave Canas a promise to marry his daughter, so he is determined to marry Kai, despite the fact that she hates him.

He hides from Kai that he is actually an immortal dragon named Acran (아크란) that is over 4,000 years old.

Usually dragons become adults at the age of about 2000 years, so other adult dragons consider Akanel to be young and inexperienced, but he lived among people and pretended to be human for many years, and he did not communicate with other dragons for a long time, so he considers himself an old man, and not a young dragon.

If he gets very angry, he will briefly turn into a giant black "European" dragon, so he always tries to be indifferent and emotionless so that people around him cannot find out that he is a dragon.

He has lived a long life and he is tired of his life, so he wants to kill himself, but for this he needs to get a legendary sword that can kill an immortal dragon. If Kai can make such a sword, then Akanel's wish to kill himself will be fulfilled, and if Kai cannot make such a sword, then Akanel's wish to marry Kai will be fulfilled.

Although Akanel has never done housework, he is very good at cooking because his friend Canas Altelion taught him how to cook.

  • Canoc Altelion (카녹 알테리온)

Kai's 20-year-old twin brother who has a sister complex. One of the top 3 swordsmen in the country of Jeguk. During the daytime, he usually acts like an innocent child, but at night he roams the city's crime district and kills bandits.

He is the head of the Altelion family because his father Canas went missing a few years ago and his family thinks he is dead.

In the novel, Kai and Canoc are very similar to each other, which is why other people, animals, and magical swords sometimes mistake Canoc for Kai, but in the webtoon, they don't have that much of a resemblance to each other.

  • Canas Altelion (카나스 알테리온)

Kai and Canoc's father. Village nobleman (count). One of the top 3 swordsmen in the country of Jeguk.

He gave his daughter the name Kai, which in ancient language means "brutal killer", "ripper", while he gave his son the name Canoc, which in ancient language means "destroyer", "breaker", "crusher", "smasher".

He has very great physical strength and a very beautiful appearance, so his children are also very strong and very beautiful. However, Kai's ability to understand the language of metals is a unique ability that no one on the planet Atreia has ever had before.

Once Canas (the legendary swordsman in the Jeguk) decided to fight with swords against Akanel (the best swordsman in the Jeguk) and made a bet with him: if Akanel loses, he will marry Canas' daughter. Akanel lost, so when Kai was 20 years old (that is, when she became an adult), he came to Altelion County to marry her.

  • Veggies Altelion (베지스 알테리온)

Canas' wife. Kai and Canoc's mother. An old-fashioned woman who wants to make her daughter Kai a decent married woman.

  • El (엘)

Owner of a shop for stolen goods in the magical kingdom of Altamir. A charming womanizer who regularly seduces various beautiful women.

He hides from Kai that he is actually the immortal king of Altamir named Cheonnyeon Wang (천년왕, lit.: "Millennial King") who along with twelve knights founded Altamir about 800 years ago.

Most of Altamir's residents love Cheonnyeon Wang and worship him like a god and regularly go to temples dedicated to him to pray, but they don't know what he looks like and they don't even suspect that their immortal king Cheonnyeon Wang and the suspicious salesman El are the same person.

Since El is the patron god of Altamir, he is chained to Altamir by an invisible magic chain and cannot go beyond Altamir.

Previously, he was a god named Baekho (백호, lit.: "White Tiger", a mythological Guardian Of The West), but then he fell in love with a human woman and transformed himself from a god into a human man in order to marry her. His wife died several centuries ago, but he still yearns for her. Kai looks like his wife, so he immediately felt an interest in her when he first saw her.

El has the ability to turn his fantasies and dreams into reality. But since he replaced his tiger god body with a human male body, his divine magic is sealed and when he uses his magic, his body feels intense physical pain, so during battles, he usually fights with a sword rather than using magic. He has the same great physical strength as Kai, making it difficult for them to defeat each other in hand-to-hand combat.

  • River Winter (리버 윈터, Ribeo Winteo)

An immortal warlock who turned himself into a lich in ancient times. He sealed himself in a mysterious box in the basement of his lab and put himself into a magical sleep for several centuries to avoid being found by his enemies who came to his lab to kill him. He also put a deadly curse on this box, which was supposed to kill those people who open this box while he is sleeping.

Centuries later, Kai accidentally opened this box and woke up River, so this curse fell on her, she lost one of her eyes and almost died. Akanel and El caught River and forced him to remove this curse from Kai and give her one of his eyes, and thanks to this, Kai's face became beautiful again, while River has always been wearing a bandage on his face since then due to the fact that he only has one eye.

Due to Kai having a part of River's body, Kai's life and River's life are closely connected and thus they live together. When any part of Kai's body receives some kind of wound, then the same part of River's body also feels pain from this wound; and when any part of River's body receives some kind of wound, then Kai's body also feels pain from this wound. For this reason, Kai and River are forced to constantly be close and protect each other from various dangers, regardless of whether they are friends or enemies. River does not want to kill Kai, so he patiently waits for her to die of old age.

He is usually in the form of a black cat or little boy because Kai gets embarrassed, angry and beats him up when he appears in front of her in the form of a young man.

In ancient times, River studied dark magic almost all the time and rarely left his laboratory, so he is still a virgin and he doesn't know how to talk to women, despite the fact that he is several centuries old. He regularly teases Kai with stupid jokes and, perhaps, he does not even suspect that his jokes may carry some kind of romantic or erotic meaning. For example, one day he suddenly jumped out of her wardrobe at the moment when Kai was changing in her room, and because of this she became very angry with him.

  • Cheongan (청안)

Kai's pet. A magical weasel. A high-ranking divine beast that can control the element of fire. He made a magical contract with Kai, so he uses his magical abilities to help her in her work as a blacksmith.

He is usually in the form of a weasel, but he can transform into a little boy, a young man, and a magical horse that looks like a weasel.

Previously, he lived in a magical research institute and various experiments were carried out on him there, but then Kai took him from this institute and settled him in her house in Altamir, so he considers Kai his benefactor and works as her assistant in her forge to repay her for saving him.

He hates all humans except Kai. When he interacts with her, he is kind, gentle and obedient.

He is good at cooking and loves doing housework.

Rusk is the owner of the phantom wolf named Tamrang. (In other words, this book is named after Rusk Altelion, the deuteragonist, and not after Innix Altelion, the protagonist.)

2. Sillyongui Juin (Hangul: 신룡의 주인, lit.: "The owner of the divine dragon"). Type: novel (paperback – 2011–2015, web novel – 2015). Volumes: 11. Status: finished. Publisher: Samyang Publishing. But in this academy, he got a "harem" which consists of several heterosexual bishounens.

Shine usually gets angry when people mistake him for a girl, however, he sometimes steals legendary books and during these thefts he pretends to be a magical girl named Mysterious Thief Shaylin so that no one recognizes him. His classmate, a heterosexual boy named Chrom Meyerheart, has fallen in love with Shaylin and wants to marry her, and he does not even suspect that Shine and Shaylin are the same person.

3. Sinsuui Juin (Hangul: 신수의 주인, lit.: "The owner of the divine beast"). Type: novel (web novel – 2016–2017, paperback – 2017). Volumes: 10. Status: finished. Publisher: Samyang Publishing. Imprint: Dream Books. Platform: Kakaopage. Genre: Romance, Fantasy, Action, Comedy, Drama.

This is a story about the adventures of a female blacksmith named Kai Altelion who lives in the patriarchal country of the Jeguk where women are required to be wives and mothers and are not allowed to be swordsmen, blacksmiths, etc., but she promised herself that she would dedicate her life to the profession of a blacksmith and never marry. However, several handsome men have fallen in love with her and are trying to win her heart.

Kai is the owner of a divine beast (a magical weasel) named Cheongan.

Kai Altelion is a distant ancestor of Shine Altelion, Innix Altelion and Rusk Altelion, so these three guys and their friends use the swords that Kai made. In addition, Shine Altelion named his dragon Kai after Kai Altelion.

Both Sinsuui Juin and Sillyongui Juin have a male character named El who is an immortal and eternally young god. In Sinsuui Juin, El is the king of the magical land of Altamir, which houses the forge where Kai Altelion works as a blacksmith, while in Sillyongui Juin, El is the director of the magical military academy "Dragon School" where Shine Altelion studies. Also, El is Tamrang's father in Hwansuui Juin. In addition, the same El is in the game Sinsuui Juin: The Summon Masters under the name Gior (기오르).

The Sillyongui Juin novel takes place about 3200 years after the ending of the Sinsuui Juin novel, while the Hwansuui Juin novel takes place about 8000 years after the ending of the Sillyongui Juin novel.

The novels Sillyongui Juin and Sinsuui Juin were adapted as webtoons, but the novel Hwansuui Juin did not receive an adaptation.

The correct English spelling of Shine and Kai's surname is Altelion, but the unofficial English translators were unaware of this, so the unofficial English translations of the webtoons Sinsuui Juin and Sillyongui Juin: The Dragon Master translated this surname as Alterion. In chapters 31–44 of the Korean webtoon Sillyongui Juin: The Dragon Master, there are profiles of some characters where their names are written in both Korean and English: 샤인 알테리온 – Shine Altelion, 티스 이타카르 – Tiss Etakar, 율케스 란츠크네 – Yulkess Landskne, 크롬 마이어하트 – Chrom Meyerheart, etc. But in the unofficial English translation of the webtoon, these characters are called Shine Alterion, Tis Iscar, Yulketh Lanskaine, Chrome Mirehart, etc., because the unofficial English translators did not read the full version of this webtoon.

Adaptation[]

Game[]

In 2013, a South Korean video game development company Climax developed a mobile collectible tactical RPG for Android called Sinsuui Juin (신수의 주인, lit.: "The owner of the divine beast"), also known as Sinsuui Juin: The Summon Masters (신수의 주인: The Summon Masters, lit.: "The owner of the divine beast: The Summon Masters"), and promised to release this game in February 2014, but the release of this game was canceled due to an accusation of copying the art style from a Japanese game Bravely Default: Flying Fairy for Nintendo 3DS (2012).

The game Sinsuui Juin: The Summon Masters was a spin-off of the novel Sinsuui Juin, not an adaptation of this novel. The scenario for Sinsuui Juin: The Summon Masters was written by more than 5 writers, including Taeseon, Sangyoung Seong (writer for The Gamer webtoon) and Horang (writer for Bongcheon-Dong Ghost webtoon).

In this game, three young summon masters (a man named Zemir and two women, Adella Landskne and Clerine Meyerheart) set out on a journey to find and tame legendary pets. The legendary swordsmen from the Altelion clan killed some legendary pets while the remaining legendary pets pretend to be human or escaped to another part of the continent, so the player must choose one of the main characters (Zemir, Adella or Clerine) to collect a collection of legendary pets and fight against the Altelion clan.

The game Sinsuui Juin: The Summon Masters takes place in the same era as the novel Sinsuui Juin, so the novel, the webtoon, and the game have the same name.
